All Elin Jones posters gone! [Press release]

Plaid Cymru’s Elin Jones has confirmed that her campaign team has run out of local election garden posters having already distributed them all to supporters throughout Ceredigion.

The hard-working Plaid Cymru candidate has been taken aback by the amount of demand for posters bearing her name in advance of the Welsh Election on 05 May 2011.

Plaid Cymru’s Elin Jones said:

“We’ve been taken aback by the demand for garden posters this year and are now working hard to reallocate those posters already located in fields so that they can appear in people’s gardens.

“The increased demand for posters reflects the warm welcome I’ve received in all parts of Ceredigion while out canvassing over recent weeks. In particular, people have been keen to discuss the local healthcare investments and transport improvements I’ve secured for Ceredigion.

“I’m now looking forward to the final few days of the campaign and intend to knock on as many doors throughout the county as possible”.

Labour majority could see hospital centralisation revisited [Press release]

Plaid Cymru’s Elin Jones has warned that the future of services at Aberystwyth’s Bronglais Hospital could be under threat if Labour wins an overall majority in the forthcoming Welsh Election.

Elin Jones
Plaid Cymru this week launched a special poster campaign to highlight Labour’s lack of commitment in its election manifesto to protecting the future of District General Hospitals in Wales.

Last month, final confirmation was also received that an unprecedented £38 million investment would be made at Bronglais, allowing plans for a new front-of-house extension at the hospital to move forward.

Speaking after the Plaid Cymru poster campaign was unveiled in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion’s Elin Jones said:

“I’m pleased that the Assembly Government during its final days gave its full backing to a £38m investment at Bronglais. However, we need to ensure that a full range of services is also available at the hospital.

“Above all, Bronglais must remain a full District General Hospital. However, I’m concerned that this could be at risk should Labour get an overall majority in May. Without a proper commitment to protecting our District General Hospitals in its manifesto, Labour is leaving the door open to resurrecting its pre-2007 centralisation plans”.

“For people in this part of Wales, there is no other option – only Bronglais. It is the only hospital between the M4 and A55 corridors. That’s why I want to be re-elected to carry on fighting Bronglais’ corner”

Plaid Cymru – For better mobile coverage [Press release]

Plaid Cymru leader, Ieuan Wyn Jones, this week (Tuesday, 19 April 2011) joined Ceredigion candidate Elin Jones at Pontrhydfendigaid to highlight how the party would improve mobile phone signal, WiFi and broadband coverage across the whole of Wales.

Elin Jones and Ieuan Wyn Jones at Pontrhydfendigaid
The pledge, described by the Plaid leader as modern and ambitious, promises that a future Plaid Cymru government will connect Wales for the 21st century with better mobile, WiFi and broadband coverage, and a modern transport system to move the nation forward.

During the visit, Mr Jones outlined how Plaid Cymru, building on the already recognisable improvements it has made to transport and communications’ infrastructure in government, would pioneer major improvements in mobile phone, broadband and WiFi across Wales, including on public transport.  Wales would become a truly wireless nation with every business and home linked to fast broadband and with WiFi spots created across the nation.

At Pontrhydfendigaid, Ieuan Wyn Jones and Elin Jones met with Duncan Taylor, the chair of the local Ger y Gors Community Forum which is currently progressing plans to erect a community mast to improve mobile phone signals in the area.

Plaid Cymru leader, and Welsh Minister for Economy and Transport, Ieuan Wyn Jones, said:

“Plaid Cymru wants to see a modern and ambitious Wales. We want to create a better connected nation: and ensure that Wales is leading the way in terms of new technologies technologies.

“There are areas across Wales, both rural and urban, that suffer from poor mobile phone coverage.  As I have seen first-hand here today, some communities are so frustrated by this that they are erecting their own community masts.  Plaid Cymru wants to develop this approach further and for more communities.

“The private sector has failed to tackle this issue and so Plaid Cymru wants to develop a national programme of working together with communities to install masts on publicly owned land.  The masts will then be offered for use to the mobile operators”.

Plaid Cymru’s candidate in Ceredigion, Elin Jones, added:

“Over recent years I’ve supported the Ger y Gors Community Forum as they’ve developed their innovative plans to erect a community mast on the outskirts of Pontrhydfendigaid.

“I know that local residents and businesses are very frustrated by the non-existant mobile phone signals in the village and I hope that this exciting project can be emulated in other communities”.

Plaid: Coming to Aberystwyth cinemas this weekend! [Press release]

In an innovative new approach to campaigning, Plaid Cymru will this week be rolling out an all-Wales cinema advertising campaign ahead of the Welsh national election on 05 May.

Elin at the Cinema Campaign launch
The latest advertising campaign is timed to coincide with the coming busy Easter weekend when cinema-goers will get to see Plaid's new cinema advert on over forty screens in cinemas across the country.

Two of the cinemas that will take part are in Aberystwyth – the Arts Centre, and the Commodore. Plaid's Ceredigion candidate Elin Jones said this emphasised Plaid's commitment to Ceredigion and its credentials as a party of innovation and new ideas.

In what is believed to be a Welsh political first, the party is confident that this week long campaign, which kicks off this Friday (22 April), will help reach new audiences including young people, parents and cinema-goers of all ages.

Plaid’s Candidate for Ceredigion Elin Jones said:

"Plaid is a party of innovation and new ideas and I'm very pleased that Aberystwyth and Ceredigion are part of this Welsh political first.

“We are determined to reach out to as many potential voters as possible during this election and this form of advertising will help reach people who may not usually engage with traditional political campaigning.

“This Welsh election campaign is a battle of ideas and our innovative cinema advert will help us communicate our ambitious alternative to a Labour majority – to vote Plaid twice for a better Wales.”

LibDems lose ground in Ceredigion [Press release]

Figures released by Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Welsh Politics this week show a dramatic fall in support in Ceredigion for the Liberal Democrats ahead of the Welsh Election on 05 May 2011.

The university students gathered the views of 1195 respondents through face to face interviews with local residents at towns throughout Ceredigion as well as via an online survey.

While the survey shows the LibDems losing ground and close to being overtaken in popularity by Labour, Plaid Cymru retained its lead in Ceredigion with 42 per cent respondents confirming their support for Elin Jones.

Previous surveys conducted in this manner by the Institute of Welsh Politics have been within 2 per cent of the final election result.

Plaid Cymru’s Elin Jones welcomed the survey’s findings and said:

“It comes as no surprise to me that the LibDems are at risk of slipping to third place here in Ceredigion at the forthcoming election.

“In my discussions with local voters on the doorstep, they feel let down by the LibDems and their empty promises. In the ConDem government, they have supported lowering the Winter Fuel Allowance; hiking tuition fees and drastic cuts to the public services we value the most.

“People appreciate that Plaid Cymru in government has been honest and have set out to achieve everything that we promised at the last election. With only a few weeks to go until polling day, I’m will be meeting as many people as possible on the doorstep in Ceredigion to outline Plaid’s ambitious plans to improve our economy, education and health services for the next five years”.

The results of the survey conducted by students of the Institute of Welsh Politics, Aberystwyth University, were:
Plaid Cymru, 42% (-7% on the 2007 result)
Lib Dems, 23% (-13%)
Labour, 20% (+15%)
Conservatives, 11% (+3%)
Others, 4% (+2%)
